Don't bother to try
The poor girl's going to die
But, nobody will cry!
The people who are near
Will perhaps wipe a tear
But, nobody will endear!
The girl cries in pain
Before she dies again
But, nobody is sane!
A girl child's pleas
For the unjust to cease
But, nobody agrees!
The poor soul never basked
Her own death was masked
But, nobody asked!
Somebody should blame
A society so lame
But, nobody came!
The Story Behind
A Marathi art film called 'Doghi' inspired me to write this poem. That movie talked about the sad plight of a rural girl whose to be husband dies before their actual marriage. That poor girl is called a bad omen and the movie takes a look at the sufferings of that poor woman. Her own parents make her a prostitute and she's deserted and treated as a slave.
This poem tells the plight of a ten year old girl bed ridden with cancer. She knows she's going to die. While bearing that pain, she's just looking for love from her near and dear ones who would ease her pain. But her parents are only too happy to get rid of her. They wanted a baby boy but got a girl. So they quietly watch her die. Nobody takes any pains to treat her either with medicines or with love. The poor girl cries and tries her best to convince them but to no avail. She dies and nobody's question this injustice as noone's really bothered.
But I feel that atleast someone should rebel against this injustice. Women should be treated equal to men and horrible malpractices like sati and child marriages should be stopped. For how long can we be mere spectators and watch a woman suffer in the jaws of chauvinism?
The girl who suffered in the Mararthi movie I just mentioned however got justice in the end. The movie ended on a positive note. Unfortunately, reality is not so bright. I only hope that in this male dominated society, woman will get their place of worth equal to that of all men. God placed both the sexes equally and assigned to each of them their vices and virtues; its men who chose to make a difference.
