The God Within

Has anyone seen God?
We do see a trace
And a distant face.

Has a religion evolved?
Some time in the past
And sure enough to last.

Has anyone asked?
Why a religion is made
How the rules are laid.

Has anyone tried?
To look in through
And find what's true.

Has anyone cared?
When prophets came
And took all the blame.

Has anyone grasped?
That they were led
By what God said.

Has anyone known?
Whether idols of stone
Lead to God's throne.

Has anyone seen?
An unseen sight
The conscience light.

Has anyone thought?
Of finding a way
To God today.

Has anyone found?
That the biggest clue
Is to look within you.

The Story Behind

This poem is a result of multiple sources of inspiration. They are mainly thoughts of Mr Osho a revolutionary, logical and extremely deep thinker. His knowledge extends to various other controversial and philosophical subjects but I like his thoughts on religion.

He says that we push religion in to the past and God into the future. But nobody wants to realise the truth about God today.

Ever wondered why all the religions of this world were created long time back? Why is a religion not created today? Where is God today? Why doesn't a Christ take birth today? No, we want him to come tomorrow. If he comes today, he will tell you the realised truth. And nobody wants to hear the truth. All the prophets of this world faced pain and humilation during their time. Why?

Because they told the truth. People couldn't bear it. But after they died, they were equaled to God. We again pushed God into the future.

Same is the case with religions. Religion is just a set of rules created by different people as per their convenience. They create their own belief and their own God to prove their uniqueness. That shows we have created God. We wanted him. He is a figment of our imagination. But our devotion is 100 % true and that exists within you. Religion is not important but religiousness is. It lasts forever.

A beautiful flower will wither away some day, but will beauty lose its identity? No, we may find some other thing as beautiful. Beautiful things are short lived but beauty is here to stay. Similarly different religions of the world at different junctures have preached some great and beautiful things. But they have become outdated with time. But religiousness will never die. It will live if we create a new religion today, whose base is science and apex is philosophy. Why do we even need a religion? Religiousness will still exist. I think atheists can be called religious. Because it lies in our heart. You can't draw a portrait of beauty. It lies within you.

The poem also questions our belief whether idols of stone lead to God. Does God exist in them? No. That is just stone. It is not living. Its a pity that we pluck a living flower from a plant(kill it) and put it at the feet of an inanimate stone. Don't do that. That idol is just an image to help you realise God. You pray to the idol but God exists within you only. You have created him so He has to lie within you. You are praying to yourself. The religiousness and devotion lies within you. That is where God really lives.

When people meditate and reach the level of deep trance, they too realise this truth that God is within. That is the ultimate truth.
